A Look at Montoso's History
Montoso has an interesting past, like many places in Puerto Rico.
Becoming Part of the United States
After the Spanish–American War in 1898, Puerto Rico changed hands. It was given to the United States by Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. This made Puerto Rico an unincorporated territory of the U.S.
Early Population Counts
Soon after, in 1899, the United States government took a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This was called a census. They found that 1,146 people lived in the Montoso barrio at that time. Over the years, the number of people living in Montoso has changed.
