Montreal Island is a small piece of land located in Chantrey Inlet, a bay in Nunavut, Canada. This island is part of the vast Canadian Arctic Archipelago. It is currently uninhabited, meaning no people live there permanently.

The island covers an area of about 25 square kilometers (about 9.6 square miles). Its coastline stretches for approximately 31 kilometers (about 19 miles).

Exploring Montreal Island

Montreal Island has been visited by several brave explorers over the years. These adventurers often faced harsh conditions in the Arctic. Their journeys helped map out this remote part of the world.

Early Visits by Explorers

One of the first known explorers to visit Montreal Island was Sir George Back. He arrived in 1834. Sir George Back had traveled down a river that is now named after him, the Back River. He left some supplies on the island for future travelers.

Discoveries on the Island

Years later, in 1839, another explorer named Thomas Simpson found Sir George Back's hidden supplies. Simpson was on his own Arctic journey. This shows how explorers often helped each other in the challenging Arctic environment.

Around 1850, some people from a lost Arctic expedition might have reached the island. Later, in 1855, explorers Anderson and Stewart traveled down the Back River. They crossed over to Montreal Island. There, they found items left behind by earlier explorers. These discoveries helped piece together the history of Arctic exploration.
