The Story of Montrose

How Montrose Was Built

Montrose was built a long time ago, in 1858. A man named Alfred Aaron Brooks (who lived from 1802 to 1888) had it built. He owned a large farm called a plantation. Mr. Brooks wanted to give Montrose as a special wedding gift to his daughter.

Montrose's Special Design

The mansion was designed in a style called Greek Revival. This means it looks a bit like ancient Greek temples. It has two floors and is made of red bricks. You can also see tall, white Corinthian columns on the outside. Inside, there is a cool circular staircase with a special recessed space called a niche.

Montrose Today

Over the years, Montrose has been used for different things. At one point, it was the home of the Holly Springs Garden Club. They even had a special garden with many different kinds of trees, called an arboretum, on the property.

You can visit Montrose during the yearly "Annual Pilgrimage and Home Tour." This is a special event where people can tour historic homes. The money raised from these tours helps to fix up and take care of the mansion.

Why Montrose is Important
