History of Mooreland
Early Beginnings and the Railroad
In 1886 and 1887, the Southern Kansas Railway built a train line through the area. This made it easier to ship goods. After the Cherokee Outlet opened in 1893, many people moved here to start farms. These new settlers helped create the town of Mooreland.
Founding the Town Company
A wealthy local resident named J. H. Dail teamed up with F. J. Knittel, John J. Bouquot, John E. Moseley, and William M. Holmes. They started the Mooreland Town Company. These founders saw that the land was good for farming. They believed that many crops could be grown there.
Naming the Town
In 1901, the Mooreland Town Company founded a town called Dail City. It was named after J. H. Dail. The company bought land from the Knittel and W. F. Jones families to plan the new town. Other people who helped develop Mooreland included John T. Davis, C. L. Lambert, J. C. Krouth, and John Arnold.
The residents quickly asked the government for a post office. But the government said no because there was already another town named "Dail" in Oklahoma Territory. So, the residents chose the name "Moreland." However, a mistake happened, and an extra "o" was added to the name on the official papers. That's how it became "Mooreland."
Growth and Economy
In March 1902, the first Mooreland post office opened. F. M. Jones was the first postmaster. The local newspaper, Mooreland Leader, started in 1903 and is still published today.
The town's economy has always relied on farming. Wheat and other grains were the main crops. Within a few years, Mooreland became a center for farm services. It had stores, places for horses, grain elevators, and places to eat.
Around World War I, there was a small oil boom in the area. Mooreland was smaller than nearby towns like Woodward, Curtis, and Quinlan, Oklahoma. While Curtis and Quinlan became smaller over time, Mooreland and Woodward continued to grow.
Mooreland Today
Mooreland celebrated its 100th birthday in 2001. A history book about the town was published then. Today, Mooreland has its own school district and several churches. It also has a newspaper, an airport, and businesses that help farmers. Many shops and services are available for the town's residents.
The main employers in Mooreland include the Mooreland Public Schools. The Western Farmers Electric Cooperative also provides many jobs. Another important employer is Prather Cues, a company that makes pool cue sticks.
Geography
