History of Moosup
Moosup gets its name from a Native American leader. This leader was called Sachem Maussup or Moosup. He was a chief of the Narragansett people. The village was officially started in 1689. This was a little over ten years after Maussup passed away.

Moosup was the childhood home of a famous baseball player. His name was Walt Dropo. He was born in 1923 and passed away in 2010. Walt was a very tall and strong man. People often called him "the Moose from Moosup."
Walt Dropo played Major League Baseball (MLB) for 13 years. He played for several teams. These included the Boston Red Sox and the Detroit Tigers. His parents came from Yugoslavia (now Bosnia and Herzegovina). They came to America to start a new life. Walt's father worked at a local textile mill. He also ran their family farm. Walt grew up in Moosup. He played baseball with his brothers. He went to Plainfield High School. Later, he attended the University of Connecticut.
