History of Moravia
Moravia gets its name from the Moravian Church, a religious group. In 1849, some Moravian families left Salem, North Carolina. They wanted to start a new community in the western United States.
Money was sent by kind Moravian sisters to buy land for a town. They hoped that selling town lots would help build a Moravian Church. These families traveled a long way to Iowa and bought many acres of land.
Founding the Town
The town of Moravia was officially planned on June 27, 1850. Its layout was recorded on July 15, 1851. Surveyors used simple tools like a pocket compass and a tapeline to measure the land.
An old road near Moravia was part of the Mormon Trail. This famous trail was used by pioneers in 1846. It stretched from Nauvoo, Illinois, all the way to Salt Lake, Utah.
Moravia's Celebrations
Moravia celebrated its 150th birthday on July 4, 2001. This big event was called a sesquicentennial anniversary. The town had a huge birthday party with fun activities all day long.
A Moravian Church was built and opened in 1851. The first Moravian families followed the traditions of their church. This church was founded in the country of Moravia in 1597.
Many of these old customs are still celebrated today. Moravia has special annual events and festivals. These events keep the town's rich history alive.
Christmas Traditions
The Moravia Tour of Homes is one example of a custom from the Moravian founders. At Christmas, Moravians used to visit their neighbors. They would admire each other's colorful Christmas decorations. This tradition continues each year with the Moravia Tour of Homes.
Another Moravian custom celebrated at Christmas is the Lovefest. This is a special religious service with music. Local people often provide the music. Traditional Moravian snacks are served, just like in the old days.
