How Morella Got Its Name
The Morella railway station was named on August 7, 1925, by the Queensland Railways Department. The name "Morella" comes from an Aboriginal word. It means "small hill."
Post Office and Town Lots
Morella had its own Post Office, which opened on July 1, 1927. It served the community for many years before closing in 1979. In November 1948, plots of land, called town lots, were sold in the area.
Community Life: The QCWA Hall
In October 1944, local women in Morella started a group called the Morella branch of the Queensland Country Women's Association (QCWA). This group helps women and communities in rural areas. At first, they met at local farmhouses. Later, around September 1951, they opened their own special meeting place, the Morella QCWA Hall.
Evesham State School
Evesham State School opened its doors on January 23, 1967. It provided education for children in the Morella area. The school was located on Silsoe Road. It stopped operating on December 31, 2009, and officially closed on December 31, 2010.
Population and Amalgamation
In the 2016 census, only 33 people lived in Morella. In January 2019, a big change happened. The local government decided to combine several smaller areas into the main town of Longreach. Morella was one of these areas. This decision meant that the Longreach Region now has only three main localities: Longreach, Ilfracombe, and Isisford.
Places of Historical Importance
Morella had some sites that were listed as heritage-listed. This means they are important historical places that are protected. One such site was:
- Darr River Downs; located on the Landsborough Highway.
Community Facilities
Even though Morella is now part of Longreach, it used to have a branch of the Queensland Country Women's Association. This community group was located off Morella Road.
