Morgan's Early Life and Inspiration
Morgan Mitchell started running in 2000 when she was just six years old. She was really inspired by another Australian athlete, Cathy Freeman, who won a gold medal at the Sydney Olympics.
When Morgan turned 12, she took a break from athletics. She decided to focus on netball instead, a sport where two teams try to score goals by shooting a ball through a hoop. She even played for Australia at a junior level! But in 2012, she decided to return to her first love: athletics.
Morgan's family has a cool background. Her dad was a professional basketball player from the United States who moved to Australia. Her mom is Australian.
Morgan's Athletics Career Highlights
Morgan has competed on the world stage many times. In 2015, she took part in the World Championships in Beijing, China. She ran in the 4 × 400 metres relay race, where four athletes each run 400 meters.
She also represented Australia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There, she competed in both the individual 400m race and the 4 × 400m relay. Her fastest time in the 400 metres is 51.25 seconds, which she achieved in 2016.
Switching to the 800 Metres
In 2019, Morgan decided to try a new challenge. She switched from sprinting the 400 metres to running the longer 800 metres race. This was a big change! She quickly got much better at it, and her personal best time for the 800 metres is now 2 minutes and 0.06 seconds.
To help with this change, Elizabeth Mathews became her new coach. Morgan also had to change her training a lot. For sprinting, she used to run about 15 kilometers (about 9 miles) a week. But for the 800 metres, she now runs 60–70 kilometers (about 37–43 miles) every week! That's a lot of running!
Olympic Games and Other Achievements
Morgan competed in the 2020 Summer Olympics held in Tokyo, Japan. She ran in the Women's 800m race, finishing sixth in her heat. Even though she didn't advance, it was a great achievement to be there.
She also took part in the 2024 Summer Olympics. Morgan is known for being vegan for over ten years. She believes that her plant-based diet helps her perform at her best as an athlete. She was even named F45's Global Athlete for Australia, which is a big honor!
