Early Life and Inspiration
Morgan Mitchell started her journey in athletics in the year 2000. She was inspired by the amazing success of another Australian athlete, Cathy Freeman, at the Sydney Olympics. However, when Morgan was 12, she stopped athletics to focus on netball, which is a team sport.
She even represented Australia in netball at a junior level. But in 2012, she decided to return to athletics.
Morgan's father was a professional basketball player from the United States who moved to Australia. Her mother is Australian.
Morgan Mitchell's Athletics Career
Morgan Mitchell has competed in many important events around the world.
Early Competitions
In 2015, she competed in the 4 × 400 metres relay race at the World Championships in Beijing. Her team did not make it to the final race.
She also represented Australia at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. There, she ran in both the Women's 400m race and the Women's 4 × 400m Relay. Her fastest time in the 400 metres race is 51.25 seconds, which she achieved in Birmingham in 2016.
Switching Races and Training
In 2019, Morgan decided to change her main race from the 400 metres to the 800 metres. She quickly got much better at the 800 metres, achieving her current fastest time of 2:00.06.
To make this change, she started working with a new coach, Elizabeth Mathews. Morgan also changed her training a lot. Before, she would run about 15 kilometers a week for sprinting. But for the 800 metres, she started running 60–70 kilometers a week! This shows how much dedication it takes to switch events and improve.
Recent Olympic Games
Morgan Mitchell competed in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 (which were postponed from 2020). She ran in her Women's 800m heat and finished sixth with a time of 2:05.44. This meant she was eliminated from the competition.
She also took part in the 2024 Summer Olympics. Morgan has been following a vegan diet for more than ten years. She believes that her vegan diet has helped her a lot in her success as an athlete.
