Moriarty is a city located in Torrance County, New Mexico, in the United States. In 2020, about 1,946 people lived there. It is part of the larger Albuquerque metropolitan area.
Moriarty is about ten miles east of Edgewood, New Mexico. Even though these towns are in different counties, they share the same school district. Moriarty is named after Michael Timothy Moriarty, who was the first person to settle permanently in the town.

What Fun Things Happen in Moriarty?
Moriarty has some interesting traditions and activities.
Pinto Bean Fiesta
Every October, Moriarty hosts the Pinto Bean Fiesta. This fun event includes games in Crossly Park. There is also a parade and a "Pinto Bean Queen" is crowned.
Soaring and Gliding
Moriarty is a famous place for soaring, which is flying a glider without an engine. The Albuquerque Soaring Club (ASC) is based at the Moriarty Municipal Airport. This airport is known for having some of the best soaring conditions in the United States all year round.
- Pilots can find strong air currents (called thermals) that can lift gliders very high.
- They can also use mountain wave currents to go even higher.
- Many pilots fly hundreds of miles from Moriarty each year.
- The airport is also home to the United States Southwest Soaring Museum.
- You can even try a glider flight with Sundance Aviation, a local company.
Fireworks Capital
Moriarty is a popular spot for buying fireworks, especially for people from the nearby Albuquerque area. There are stores open all year and special tents that open for a few weeks around the Fourth of July. Many types of fireworks are sold here.
