Morray's Early Life
Morray grew up in Fayetteville, North Carolina. From a young age, he listened to R&B and gospel music. He started singing in his local church when he was just four years old. At age 12, he moved to Lebanon, Pennsylvania, and lived there for six years. While in Pennsylvania, he met a rap group called SGS. They inspired him to start making his own music.
When he was 19, he faced some challenges. In his early 20s, he spent some time in difficult situations. While raising his child, he worked in construction and also recorded music whenever he could. In 2014, he released his very first song, which he made for his wife's birthday. After that, he started taking music much more seriously. In 2020, he lost his job at a call center. He then decided to focus completely on his music career to support his three children.
Morray's Music Career
In March 2020, Morray released his first music video for the song "Quicksand". This video helped him get noticed by a media manager named Moe Shalizi. Moe Shalizi became Morray's manager and also started a record label called Pick Six Records. In 2020, Morray also released two more songs with Mo Chedda: "Snitch On Ya Man's" and "In Da Trap".
On October 30, Morray and Shalizi officially re-released "Quicksand" as a single song. It later appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. After this song became popular, other rappers from North Carolina, like J. Cole and DaBaby, showed their support for Morray. "Quicksand" was streamed millions of times. Billboard magazine even featured him as one of their "Emerging Artists." In an interview with Billboard, Morray shared his goals. He said, "I want to be that light in the ghetto. I want to be the person that makes you smile and shows you the hood ain't all bad. I appreciate where I came from and I know that the ghetto can bring both positive and negative memories." He released three more songs in 2020: "Switched Up," "Low Key," and "Dreamland."
In 2021, Morray released the songs "Big Decisions" and "Kingdom." On April 16, Morray announced that he had signed with Interscope Records. This was a joint deal with Pick Six. He released the song "Trenches" in April, just before his first big music project came out. His mixtape Street Sermons was released on April 28, 2021. This mixtape reached number 41 on the US Billboard 200 chart.
On May 14, Morray was a special guest on J. Cole's album The Off-Season. He was featured on the song "My Life" along with 21 Savage. This song reached number two on the Hot 100 chart. It became his highest-charting and most successful song. Also in 2021, he was part of the 2021 XXL Freshman Class, which highlights new and rising hip-hop artists. On June 22, it was announced that Morray would join J. Cole and 21 Savage on their The Off-Season Tour. He performed as their opening act. On July 30, Morray released a new version of his song "Trenches" that featured Polo G.
Morray's Music Style
Morray grew up listening to artists like Usher. He was inspired by how Drake could both rap and sing so smoothly. People have compared his music style to CeeLo Green. His sound has been described as mixing the soulful feeling of Big K.R.I.T. with the lively beat of Outkast.
