Mortal Kombat: Defenders of the Realm is an animated TV show from 1996. It is based on the super popular Mortal Kombat video games. The show was made by Threshold Entertainment and Film Roman. It aired on the USA Network for one season, from September to December 1996. There were 13 episodes in total.
This series acts like a follow-up to the first Mortal Kombat movie. It also includes events from the Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 video game.
What the Show is About
The show follows a group of brave warriors. They are brought together by Raiden, a powerful god. Their mission is to protect Earthrealm from bad guys who try to invade. These invaders come through special doorways called portals from other dimensions.
The team of heroes includes:
- Liu Kang
- Stryker
- Sonya Blade
- Jax
- Kitana
- Sub-Zero
Nightwolf helps the team from their secret base. He mostly handles the technology, but he also joins the fights sometimes. Raiden and Nightwolf watch for new portals opening. When a portal appears, the warriors fly out in cool dragon-shaped jets to stop the invaders.
Shao Kahn is the main bad guy of the series. Even though he only appears in four episodes, he is behind many of the invasions. He lets other realms attack Earthrealm.
The characters in the show look like their versions from the Mortal Kombat 3 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 games. Some new characters were also made just for the show. The show also introduced a new villain named Quan Chi. He later became a very important bad guy in the Mortal Kombat video games.
