History of Morteros
Before the Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s, the land where Morteros now stands was home to indigenous groups. These groups included the Sanavirónes and the Mocovíes.
The Fortress of Los Morteros
In the 1700s, the Spanish built a fort called Los Morteros. This fort was built on a rocky area. Its main job was to protect the land around it. The fort was also on a different path that led to the mining area of Potosí in Peru. It was used as a place for trading goods.
After the May Revolution in Argentina, the indigenous people took back control of the fort and the local area. Even though most of the Sanavirónes were gone, the Mocovíes and Abipones moved into the region. Later, European Argentines fought back and took the land again in the mid-1800s. During this time, the indigenous population faced many challenges and their numbers greatly decreased.
Growth of the City
In 1891, the first railway line reached Morteros. The railway brought many new people to the area. These were mostly immigrants from different parts of Italy, such as Piamonte, Friuli, and Toscana. Morteros officially became a city in 1965.
