Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Morvidus (in Welsh: Morydd map Daned) was a legendary king of the Britons. His story is told by Geoffrey of Monmouth. He ruled from 341 to 336 BCE. Morvidus was the son of King Danius and his partner Tangustela.

Life as King

Geoffrey of Monmouth described Morvidus as a ruler who was often kind and generous. He liked to give gifts to people. However, he could also be quick to anger.

Battles and Victories

During his time as king, an enemy ruler from a place called Morini invaded Northumberland. This invasion caused a lot of damage to the land. King Morvidus bravely led his army to meet the invaders in battle. He fought hard and successfully defeated the Morini king and his forces.

Morvidus was also known for fighting a giant. He used a large tree, which he pulled from the ground and stripped of its branches, as a weapon. He defeated the giant in this way. Because of this story, Morvidus is linked to the symbol of a "ragged staff." This symbol can be seen on the crest of the Earl of Warwick, who are thought to be related to Morvidus.

The Sea Monster

Later in his reign, a terrible monster appeared from the Irish Sea. This creature began to attack and eat people living along the western coasts. King Morvidus decided to face the beast himself to protect his people. He fought the monster alone, using all his weapons, but nothing seemed to harm it. In the end, the monster defeated Morvidus, and he lost his life fighting to save his kingdom.

Morvidus's Sons

Morvidus had five sons: Gorbonianus, Archgallo, Elidurus, Ingenius, and Peredurus. All five of his sons later became kings of the Britons. His eldest son, Gorbonianus, became the next king after Morvidus.
