Mothel is a small village in County Waterford, Ireland. Its name, Maothail, means 'spongy land' in the Irish language. The village is located near the Comeragh Mountains. It is about 5 kilometers north of Carrick-on-Suir. Waterford city is also nearby, about 20 kilometers to the east. Mothel is also a civil parish and a townland.

Mothel's Rich History

Mothel has a very long and interesting history.

Mothel Abbey

Mothel Abbey is an important historical site in the village. It was first started way back in the 500s by a person known as St. Breoghan. Later, in the 1200s, a family called the Power family helped rebuild it. They rebuilt it for a group of monks known as the Augustinians. This abbey was connected to other important abbeys like Molana Abbey and St. Catherine's Abbey in Waterford.

The Cross Pillar Stone

You can find a special stone in Mothel called a Cross Pillar stone. It is also known as a termon-stone. This stone stands by the side of the road. It is a square pillar made of sandstone and is about four feet tall. The stone has beautiful crosses carved into it.

The Holy Well Tradition

Mothel also has a traditional holy well. On a special day called Lá Chuain Airbhre, which is a local Pattern day, people traditionally walk through the stream at the holy well seven times. This is a very old local custom.
