Perideridia bacigalupii is a special kind of flowering plant. It belongs to the Apiaceae family, which also includes carrots and celery! People often call it Mother Lode yampah or Bacigalupi's perideridia. This plant is quite rare and not found very often.

It is endemic to California, which means it grows naturally only in California and nowhere else in the world. You can find it in the northern and central parts of the Sierra Nevada foothills.

What is Mother Lode Yampah?

Mother Lode yampah is a type of herb that grows back year after year. It can get quite tall, sometimes even taller than a grown-up, reaching over 1.5 meters (about 5 feet) high! Its stem is thin and grows straight up from special underground parts called tubers. Tubers are like small, round storage units, similar to potatoes, that help the plant keep nutrients.

Where Does it Grow?

This plant likes to live in certain types of places in California. It grows in areas called chaparral, which are dry lands with shrubs and small trees. It also likes pine woodlands, which are forests filled with pine trees. These habitats are perfect for the Mother Lode yampah to thrive.

How Does it Look?

The leaves of the Mother Lode yampah are very interesting! The leaves near the bottom of the plant can be quite long, up to 40 centimeters (about 16 inches). They are divided into many narrow, smaller sections, almost like tiny fingers. As you look higher up the plant, the leaves become smaller and are not as divided.

The plant's flowers grow in a special way. They form a large cluster called an inflorescence. This cluster looks like an umbel, which means it's shaped a bit like an umbrella, with many small stems spreading out from a central point. Each of these stems holds a round bunch of tiny white flowers.

After the flowers bloom, they produce small fruits. These fruits are shaped like oblongs (a bit like a stretched-out circle) and have ridges. They are usually about half a centimeter long.
