The Story of Mother Mother
How the Band Started (2005–2006)
The band began in January 2005 in British Columbia. Ryan Guldemond was studying music. He wanted to start a band that focused on strong singing. He asked his sister Molly and a friend, Debra-Jean Creelman, to sing with him. At first, they played acoustic songs. Later, they added drummer Kenton Loewen and bassist Jeremy Page.
The five members first called themselves "Mother". In late 2005, they released their first album. It was recorded with producer Howard Redekopp. In 2007, a newspaper called Vancouver Province said Mother was one of the top five bands to watch. This helped them get noticed. They even opened concerts for famous artists like K'naan. In 2006, they played for the Australian band The Cat Empire at a big festival. They also played at jazz festivals in Montreal and Toronto.
New Name and More Albums (2006–2012)
In October 2006, the band met with Last Gang Records. They signed a contract for four albums. The record label asked them to change their name. This was to avoid any legal problems. So, they became "Mother Mother". On February 20, 2007, they re-released their first album. It was renamed Touch Up. It also had two new songs and different artwork.
The band released their second album, O My Heart, in 2008. On December 3, Debra-Jean Creelman left the band. On January 26, 2009, Jasmin Parkin joined as the new singer and keyboard player.
Mother Mother's third album, Eureka, came out on March 15, 2011. The first song from the album, "The Stand", became popular in Canada. A reviewer from the Toronto Star newspaper said the band was "evolving". They described their music as having "orchestral harmonies" and "hip hop-influenced power ballads".
In 2012, Kraft Foods used the song "Bright Idea" in their TV commercials.
New Sounds and Tours (2012–2018)
Mother Mother's fourth album, The Sticks, was released on September 18, 2012. It had 14 songs. Ryan Guldemond and Ben Kaplan produced it together. The first song, "Let's Fall in Love", came out on July 17. They played this song on their Canadian tour in 2012.
In 2014, the band signed with Universal Music Canada. They released their fifth album, Very Good Bad Thing, on November 4, 2014. The first song from this album was "Get Out the Way".
Mother Mother played at a New Year's event in Brampton, Ontario, in late 2016. On November 24, 2016, they announced their "No Culture Tour" in Canada. The tour started in February 2017 and ended in March 2017. Their sixth album, No Culture, was released on February 10, 2017.
Viral Success and New Music (2018–Present)
On November 2, 2018, the band released their seventh album, Dance and Cry. The first song from it was "Get Up". The band went on the "Dance and Cry tour". They played 26 shows across North America in early 2019.
Starting in late 2020, songs from their 2008 album, O My Heart, became very popular on TikTok. Songs like "Hayloft", "Arms Tonite", and "Wrecking Ball" were used in many videos. This made their music reach new fans. People used Mother Mother songs to talk about gender topics.
Lead singer, Ryan Guldemond, said it was a "high honor" that their music helped people on their "courageous journey of self-discovery". He felt that their early music was "eccentric, quirky, daring". He thought maybe it was "just the right time for people to understand that music".
Even though they had not planned new music, in October 2020, they told Rolling Stone that they were finishing their eighth album. They called it a "pandemic album". On March 9, 2021, Mother Mother released two new songs: "I Got Love" and "Stay Behind". On April 8, 2021, they announced their eighth album, Inside. It was released on June 25, 2021. The band also released a video for "I Got Love" using clips sent by fans. They released another song, "Sick of the Silence", on June 10, 2021. They also announced a Canadian tour for the Inside album.
In November 2022, Mother Mother released a new song called "Cry Christmas". They also released a cover of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas". The band said "Cry Christmas" was "a holiday song for the holiday-disenfranchised".
