History of Mount Babel

How Mount Babel Got Its Name

The mountain is named after Louis Babel (1829–1912). He was a Catholic missionary. He worked with the Innu people, also known as Montagnais and Naskapis.

How Mount Babel Was Formed

Mount Babel is the central peak of the Manicouagan crater. This crater was made by a huge meteor. The meteor hit Earth about 210 million years ago. After the impact, the Earth's crust bounced back up. This created Mount Babel.

Geologists are scientists who study rocks and the Earth. They find Mount Babel and the nearby reservoir very interesting. This is because the rocks here show signs of "shock metamorphosis." This means the rocks changed a lot due to the extreme pressure and heat from the meteor impact.

Exploring the Biodiversity

Mount Babel is also a special place for biologists. Biologists are scientists who study living things. They learn a lot about plants and animals here.

Different Climate Zones

As you go up Mount Babel, the weather changes a lot. You can find different climate zones. These include areas like subalpine and alpine zones. The higher you go, the colder and windier it gets.

From Forest to Tundra

These changing conditions create a quick shift in the types of plants you see. At the bottom, there is a boreal forest. This is a forest with many evergreen trees. As you climb higher, the forest quickly changes into tundra.

Tundra is a very cold, treeless area. In the tundra on Mount Babel, you can find lichen. You can also find other types of arctic life. These plants and animals usually live hundreds of kilometers further north.
