How Mount Blackmore Got Its Name
The mountain was named during an important expedition in the 1870s. In 1872, a survey team led by Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden explored the Yellowstone area. They decided to name the peak after Mary Blackmore.
Mary Blackmore was the wife of William Blackmore. William was an English businessman and a kind person who joined the Hayden Survey. Sadly, Mary became sick with pneumonia and passed away in Bozeman, Montana, during the summer of 1872. Naming the mountain after her was a way to remember her.
