The East Gallatin River is a cool river in Gallatin County, Montana. It flows for about 42 miles (68 km) (that's about 68 kilometers) through the beautiful Gallatin Valley. The river starts near Bozeman, Montana, where several small streams come together.
As it travels, the East Gallatin River flows mostly through farms and ranches. It eventually joins the main Gallatin River near Manhattan, Montana. In the summer, the river usually flows at about 50 cubic feet per second. This means a lot of water moves through it!

Fishing Fun in the East Gallatin River
The East Gallatin River is a super popular spot for fishing. Many people come here to catch different kinds of trout.
What Fish Live Here?
You can find lots of fish in the East Gallatin River. The most common types are:
- Rainbow trout: These fish are known for their colorful sides.
- Brown trout: These are often bigger and can be a bit trickier to catch.
- Mountain whitefish: These are native fish that also live in the river.
Where Can You Fish?
It can be a bit tricky to find places to fish along the river. Most access points are at country road crossings. There are also two special public access sites. These sites are looked after by the Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks department.
Spring Creeks for More Fishing
The East Gallatin River gets water from many smaller streams called spring creeks. Two famous ones are Ben Hart Spring Creek and Thompson Spring Creek. These spring creeks are also excellent places for trout fishing. They add even more great spots for anglers to enjoy.
