Exploring Mount Calowahcan

Most of the Mission Mountains are special protected areas. This means people can mostly use them for fun outdoor activities. You cannot use motorized vehicles like trail bikes, motorcycles, or snowmobiles here. Even hang-gliders and mountain bikes are not allowed. If you are caught with one, you could get a ticket.

Rules for Visiting

Some parts of the land belong to the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes. If you are not a tribal member, you need a special permit to visit these areas. You can easily get this permit at local sporting goods stores. The pass is good for a whole year, from March 1st to February 28th or 29th. It lets you visit certain parts of the Mission Mountains and areas along the Flathead River. Always check the rules for the current year before you go.

Protecting the Mountain

Mount Calowahcan is a very important place. It is looked after by the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes of the Flathead Nation. This means they help keep the mountain healthy and safe.

Who Manages the Land?

The mountain is also part of the Flathead National Forest. Inside this forest is a special place called the Mission Mountains Wilderness. A wilderness area is a wild place kept safe from human development. This wilderness area covers about 73,877 acres. It was made a wilderness on January 4, 1975. It is managed under a law called the Wilderness Act of 1964.

Home for Grizzly Bears

South of Mount Calowahcan is a large area that helps protect grizzly bears. This area is usually closed to hikers from July through September. This closure helps the bears find food like ladybugs and cutworms. It also helps keep bears and people from meeting each other too often.
