The Story of Mount Eyak
How It All Began
The history of Mount Eyak started in 1948. That's when the Sheridan Ski Club was formed by local skiers. They set up a simple rope tow near where the Mews Apartments are today. They even had lights so people could ski at night!
Upgrades and Improvements
A big improvement came in 1966. The club used a modified car chassis to power the rope tow. There's still a rope tow in the same spot today, but it has been updated many times. This rope tow helps skiers on the "bunny hill." It also takes skiers from the main lift to the rental room and other buildings.
In 1973, the City of Cordova received some grants to help build the ski area. These grants, along with money from the city and the Sheridan Ski Club, helped create the facilities you see today. The ski club also contributed about $29,000 and lots of volunteer work.
The Famous Single Chairlift
Mount Eyak currently has a single chairlift and the rope tow. The chairlift was bought from Sun Valley, Idaho. It traveled by train to Seattle, then by ferry to Cordova.
The Sheridan Ski Club painted the towers and fixed the chairs. Then, in 1974, the U.S. Army used its helicopters to put the towers in place. This chairlift was first built in 1939. It is the oldest working chairlift in North America! It's also one of only two single chairlifts still in use. The other one is at Mad River Glen, Vermont.
