Mount Fitzgerald is a very tall and impressive mountain located in Elko County, Nevada, in the United States. It's a big part of the beautiful Ruby Mountains range. This mountain is quite famous for its height! It ranks as the fourth-highest named mountain in the Ruby Mountains and the fifth-highest in all of Elko County. If you look at the entire state of Nevada, Mount Fitzgerald is the thirty-ninth-highest mountain there.
About Mount Fitzgerald
Mount Fitzgerald stands at an elevation of 11,220 ft (3,420 m) (which is about 3,420 meters) above sea level. It's known for its unique shape, which looks like a "glacial horn". This means it has sharp, pointy peaks formed by glaciers carving away at its sides over many, many years.
Location and Features
The mountain rises from the top parts of two canyons: Thomas Canyon and Right Fork Canyon. Both of these are branches of the larger Lamoille Canyon. Mount Fitzgerald also forms part of the northern wall of Box Canyon. This makes it a truly striking feature in the landscape.
The very top of Mount Fitzgerald is a high, long ridge. It's located about 24 miles (39 km) southeast of the town of Elko. The mountain is part of a protected area called the Ruby Mountains Wilderness, which is managed by the Ruby Mountains Ranger District within the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest. This area is special because it helps protect the natural beauty and wildlife of the region.
Exploring Mount Fitzgerald
For those who love adventure, the easiest way to reach the summit of Mount Fitzgerald is from its east side, starting near Snow Lake. This route involves both hiking and "scrambling." Scrambling is like a mix of hiking and easy rock climbing, where you might need to use your hands to help you move over rocky parts. It's a challenging but rewarding journey for experienced hikers.
