Mount Gosford is a mountain in southern Quebec, Canada. It sits right on the border with Maine, a state in the United States. The mountain is entirely within the town of Saint-Augustin-de-Woburn in the Estrie region. It is part of the White Mountains, which are a section of the larger Appalachian range.
The mountain is named after Archibald Acheson, 2nd Earl of Gosford. He was a very important person called a governor general of British North America from 1835 to 1838. A governor general was like the Queen's representative in the colonies back then. Mount Gosford is the 21st highest peak in Quebec. It is also the 4th highest in Southern Quebec.
Mount Gosford is made of very old rocks. These rocks are called gneiss and granulite. They formed during the Precambrian era, which was a very, very long time ago in Earth's history.
Protecting Mount Gosford's Nature
Since 1978, Mount Gosford has been part of "ZEC Louise-Gosford". A ZEC is a special area in Quebec where people can enjoy outdoor activities. These activities include hunting, fishing, and hiking. The public can visit these areas.
More recently, areas of the mountain higher than 700 metres (about 2,300 feet) were given a special title. They were named Important Bird Areas. This is because of a special bird called the Bicknell's thrush. This bird lives only on mountain peaks in northeastern North America.
In 2009, the Quebec government decided to protect part of Mount Gosford even more. They set aside some land to create an ecological reserve. This means the area is specially protected to keep its nature safe.
In the same year, about 76 hectares (about 188 acres) of the mountain became known as forêt rare du Mont-Gosford. This means "Mount Gosford's Rare Forest". It was declared an exceptional forest ecosystem. This special title helps protect unique plants like mountain woodsorrels. These plants are considered rare at such high altitudes.
