Exploring Mount Josephine's History
How Mount Josephine Got Its Name
Mount Josephine received its name in a special way. It was named after a young woman called Josephine Godfrey. She was from Detroit, Michigan. In 1853, Josephine led a group of her young friends on an exciting day trip. They traveled from Grand Portage, Minnesota, all the way to the top of the mountain.
A Family Connection to the Area
Josephine Godfrey's father, John Godfrey, was also an important person in the area. He owned a trading post. This trading post was located where the town of Grand Marais, Minnesota is today. John Godfrey ran his trading post until the year 1858. The mountain's name helps us remember Josephine's adventurous spirit and her family's history in Minnesota.
