Mount Malone: A Giant in Antarctica

Mount Malone stands at an impressive height of 2,460 metres (8,070 ft) (about 8,071 feet). To give you an idea, that's almost as tall as three Eiffel Towers stacked on top of each other! It is located about 8 nautical miles (15 km) east of another mountain called Mount Barden.

Where is Mount Malone?

This giant mountain is found in the northern part of the Sentinel Range. The Sentinel Range itself is a major part of the Ellsworth Mountains. These mountains are in a region of Antarctica known as Ellsworth Land. Mount Malone is the highest point of an area called Sostra Heights. On its west side, you'll find the Sabazios Glacier, which is a slow-moving river of ice. To its northeast, there's another glacier called Anchialus Glacier.

How Was Mount Malone Discovered and Named?

Mount Malone was first mapped out between 1957 and 1959. This mapping work was done by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). They used special surveys and air photos taken by the United States Navy (U.S. Navy) from airplanes.

Who Was Captain Wallace R. Malone?

The mountain was named by the Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names. They chose to honor Captain Wallace R. Malone of the United States Air Force. Captain Malone played an important role in setting up the South Pole Station during the 1956–57 season. The South Pole Station is a famous research base located right at the geographic South Pole. Naming the mountain after him was a way to recognize his contributions to exploring and understanding Antarctica.
