Mount Perry is a small town in Queensland, Australia. It is located in the North Burnett Region. In 2021, about 487 people lived there. A small area called Drummers Creek is also part of Mount Perry.

Where is Mount Perry?

Mount Perry is about 365 kilometers (227 miles) northwest of Brisbane. Brisbane is the capital city of Queensland. The town is also about 100 kilometers (62 miles) west of Bundaberg.

The town sits in a valley near Mount Perry, which is the highest mountain in the area. You can find two great spots for views. Normanby Lookout offers views of the town and the countryside. Schuh’s Lookout gives you views to the south of Mount Perry.

A Look at Mount Perry's Past

The land around Mount Perry has long been home to the Gureng Gureng people. Their language area includes towns like Bundaberg and Gin Gin.

The name "Mount Perry" comes from a large farm, or pastoral run, named in 1857. At first, there were two small towns here. One was called Fife-Barnett, and the other was Tenningering. Tenningering was officially renamed Mount Perry in 1915.

In 1869, people found copper in Mount Perry. This discovery made the town grow very quickly. To transport the copper cheaply, a railway line was needed. The first part of the Mount Perry railway line opened in 1881. It connected Mount Perry to Bundaberg.

Schools and Post Office

Mount Perry Provisional School opened on October 7, 1871. It started in a simple building with 36 students. It became Mount Perry State School in 1874. In the early 1900s, hundreds of students attended the school. A new school building opened in September 1954.

The Mount Perry Post Office opened on July 26, 1871. For a short time, it was known as Tenningering.

Drummer's Creek Provisional School opened in 1880. It became a state school in 1909 and closed in 1959.

Churches in Mount Perry

Several churches were built in Mount Perry over the years.

  • The Mount Perry Wesleyan Methodist Church opened in 1872. It was made of timber and could seat 120 people. This church building was later moved to other towns.
  • St Patrick's Catholic Church was built in 1873. A Catholic school also opened there. A new St Patrick's Church was built in 1904.
  • St Anne's Anglican Church was built in 1903. It could seat 100 people.
  • The Mount Perry Presbyterian Church opened in 1908. It has since closed, but the building is still there.
  • The Salvation Army hall opened in 1908.

Mount Perry State School is a primary school for children from early childhood up to Year 6. It is located on Annie Street. In 2018, the school had 52 students.

There are no high schools directly in Mount Perry. Older students usually travel to high schools in nearby towns like Gin Gin or Gayndah. For those who live too far away, options include learning from home or going to a boarding school.

Mount Perry has some interesting places to visit.

  • There is an art gallery and a bicentennial museum. The museum has an old gold stamper that they can show you how it works!
  • An 18-kilometer (11-mile) section of the Bicentennial National Trail passes through the area. This trail is great for walking, cycling, or horse riding.
