Mount Persis is a tall mountain in Washington state, reaching 5,464 feet high. It's located in Snohomish County and is part of the beautiful Cascade Range. This mountain is found within the Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest.

The mountain was named after Persis Gunn. She was the wife of Amos Gunn, a homesteader and miner. Amos Gunn helped start the nearby town of Index, Washington. He also named the nearby Mount Index. Water from Mount Persis flows into smaller streams that eventually join the Skykomish River.

Understanding Mount Persis's Weather

Mount Persis is in a special climate zone called the marine west coast climate. This means it gets a lot of weather from the Pacific Ocean. Most weather systems travel from the ocean toward the Cascade Range.

How Mountains Affect Weather

When these weather systems reach the tall peaks of the Cascade Range, they are forced to rise. As the air goes higher, it cools down. This cooling makes the moisture in the air turn into rain or snow. This process is called Orographic lift. Because of this, the western side of the Cascade Mountains gets a lot of rain and snow, especially in winter.

Temperatures and Snowfall

Because Mount Persis is close to the Pacific Ocean, its temperatures usually stay mild. It rarely gets colder than 0°F (about -18°C) or hotter than 80°F (about 27°C).

In winter, the weather is often cloudy. But in summer, high-pressure systems over the Pacific Ocean often bring clear skies. The snow that falls on Mount Persis tends to be wet and heavy. This type of snow can increase the risk of avalanches.
