Why is it Called Mount Saugstad?

Honoring Reverend Christian Saugstad

Mount Saugstad was named after a special person named Christian Saugstad. He was a Reverend, which means he was a religious leader. Reverend Saugstad led a group of Norwegian people who had settled in Minnesota, a state in the United States.

A New Home in Bella Coola

A settler named B.F. Jacobsen encouraged Reverend Saugstad and his group to move to Bella Coola. Jacobsen had already moved to the area before the year 1890. The Reverend Saugstad became the pastor, or leader, of the local church community in Bella Coola. He served there until he passed away in 1897.

Other Nearby Mountains

Another mountain nearby, called Mount Jacobsen, was named after B.F. Jacobsen. There is also West Jacobsen Peak, which is part of the same mountain group. Naming mountains after important people who helped settle the area was a common way to honor them.
