Mount Swanzy is a mountain peak in Glacier National Park. It stands 2,891 meters (9,485 feet) tall. This mountain is part of the Selkirk Mountains in British Columbia, Canada.

Mount Swanzy is surrounded by large ice fields called glaciers. These include the Bonney Glacier, Clarke Glacier, and Swanzy Glacier. Its closest taller neighbor is Mount Bonney, about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) away to the west.

History of Mount Swanzy

How Mount Swanzy Got Its Name

The mountain was named in 1895 by three explorers: Mr. Abbot, Mr. Fay, and Mr. Thompson. They named it after Henry Swanzy, a religious leader.

Reverend Henry Swanzy and Reverend William Spotswood Green helped introduce the world to the Selkirk Mountains. They were among the first to climb Mount Bonney and other peaks in 1888.

First Climbs of Mount Swanzy

The very first time someone successfully climbed Mount Swanzy was in 1900. The climbing team included Arthur Michael, Sydney Spencer, Edouard Feuz Sr, and Friedrich Michel.

The name "Mount Swanzy" became official in 1932. This was approved by the Geographical Names Board of Canada.

Mount Swanzy is in a subarctic climate zone. This means it has very cold, snowy winters. The summers are usually mild.

Temperatures can drop below −20 °C (−4 °F). With wind, it can feel even colder, below −30 °C (−22 °F). Rain and melted ice from the glaciers flow into nearby rivers. This water drains north into the Illecillewaet River or south into the Incomappleux River.
