History of Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon was first planned out and mapped in 1845. The city was named after Mount Vernon, which was the famous home of George Washington, America's first president. A post office has been open in Mount Vernon since 1846, helping people send and receive mail for a very long time!
Two important places in Mount Vernon are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the Lawrence County Courthouse and the Old Spanish Fort Archeological Site. This means they are special and protected because of their history.
