Mount Whymper is a tall mountain in the Canadian Rockies, located in British Columbia, Canada. It stands 2,844 meters (about 9,331 feet) high. You can find it in Kootenay National Park, near an area called Vermilion Pass.
The mountain is named after Edward Whymper. He was an English alpinist (a mountain climber), an explorer, a writer, and an engraver (someone who carves designs into surfaces).

The Story Behind the Name
Mount Whymper was named to honor Edward Whymper. He was the first person known to climb it. Before it was renamed, the mountain was called Mount Lefroy.
First Climb and Renaming
In 1901, Edward Whymper and his four guides successfully climbed the mountain. His guides were Joseph Bossoney, Christian Kaufmann, Christian Klucker, and James Pollinger. After this important climb, the mountain was renamed Mount Whymper.
Exploring the Rockies
Whymper was exploring the Canadian Rocky Mountains because he was sponsored by the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR). The CPR wanted him to promote the beauty of the Canadian Rockies and encourage people to travel there by train. He would give talks about his adventures.
