Mountain View (also known as Rough and Ready) is a small area in Clayton County, Georgia, United States. It's not an official city anymore. It's located near Forest Park and the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

History of Mountain View

Mountain View was first called Rough and Ready. This name came from the Rough and Ready Tavern. This tavern was a stop for stagecoaches traveling between Macon and northern Georgia. Later, it became the first train station south of Atlanta on the Macon and Western Railroad.

American Civil War Events

During the Atlanta Campaign in 1864, the Rough and Ready Tavern was important. It served as a temporary base for Confederate Lieutenant-General William J. Hardee. This was during the American Civil War.

Mountain View in the 20th Century

The area became an official city in 1956 and changed its name to Mountain View. The name "Mountain View" was chosen because on a clear day, you could see Stone Mountain about 20 miles away. The city's motto was "Gateway to Clayton County."

Mountain View was a city from 1956 until January 1978. At that time, the Georgia state government decided to remove its city status. Lawmakers from Clayton County wanted to end the city's charter. This was done to fix problems with how the city government was being run.

The city had faced some challenges over the years. In 1972, then-Governor Jimmy Carter temporarily stopped Mountain View's police from operating. This happened during an investigation into claims about a "speed trap" on I-75. Even though no wrongdoing was proven, these claims added to the city's public image problems.

Also, the city had a reputation for certain issues. These included its rules about selling drinks and concerns about public behavior. Because of these ongoing problems, state lawmakers decided the city was causing issues for Clayton County.

Before the city was officially dissolved, the Atlanta airport started buying properties in Mountain View. This was because of the loud noise from planes taking off and landing nearby. In 1978, an expert said Mountain View was one of the loudest cities in the U.S. or Europe due to airport noise. Many residents didn't want to leave their homes. Some properties had to be bought by the government for public use, even if owners didn't want to sell.

In the past, about 2,100 to 3,000 people lived in Mountain View. The current population is not known. However, some of the original businesses from Mountain View are still there today.

Economy and Future Plans

There are plans to develop the Mountain View area for businesses. However, these plans do not include building homes for people. This is because of the high noise levels from the nearby airport.

In Popular Culture

  • The famous novel Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell mentions Rough and Ready. In the book, people from Atlanta were sent to Rough and Ready by train. From there, they traveled further south to safety.
