Discovering the History of Muckross House
Muckross House has sixty-five rooms and was built in a style called Tudor Revival. This means it looked like old Tudor-era buildings. In the 1850s, the Herbert family, who owned the house, made many big changes. They were getting ready for a special visit from Queen Victoria in 1861.
It is believed that these expensive improvements for the Queen's visit caused money problems for the Herbert family. Because of this, they had to sell their grand estate.
New Owners and a Special Gift
In 1899, Arthur Guinness, 1st Baron Ardilaun bought Muckross House. He wanted to protect the amazing natural beauty of the area. He did not live in the house himself. Instead, he rented it out to rich groups as a place for hunting.
Later, in 1911, a very wealthy American named William Bowers Bourn bought Muckross House. He was a mining businessman from California. William Bourn and his wife gave the house to their daughter, Maud, and her husband, Arthur Rose Vincent, as a wedding gift. Maud and Arthur lived there until Maud sadly passed away in 1929.
In 1932, Maud's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Bourn, and her husband, Arthur Vincent, made a wonderful decision. They gave Muckross House and its huge 11,000-acre estate to the Irish nation. This special gift was named the "Bourn-Vincent Memorial Park." It became the very first National Park in the Republic of Ireland. This park then grew into what we know today as Killarney National Park. Later, even more land was added to the park from another large estate.
