Mud Creek actually starts as two smaller streams in southern Habersham County. These are called North Fork Mud Creek and South Fork Mud Creek.

The Two Forks

The North Fork begins north of Cornelia. It is just east of U.S. Route 23. The South Fork starts right in the middle of Cornelia, on South Main Street.

Both of these forks flow towards the east-northeast for about 3 miles. They both cross over US 23. Then, they meet up just south of State Route 105. This is where they officially become Mud Creek.

Mud Creek's Journey

After forming, Mud Creek flows towards the west-southwest. It runs alongside the Soque River for a bit. Then, it flows next to the Chattahoochee River. This happens after the Soque River joins the Chattahoochee. Mud Creek also runs parallel to US 23 on its south side.

The creek flows towards State Route 384 for about 2 miles. It crosses this state route and continues towards Hall County for several more miles. Along the way, other small streams join Mud Creek. These include Perkins Branch, Wooten Branch, and other unnamed streams, all coming from the north.

Joining the Chattahoochee

Soon after Mud Creek enters Hall County, another stream called Little Mud Creek joins it. Little Mud Creek starts just south of Cornelia. It flows parallel to Mud Creek through Habersham County. It drains the southeastern part of the area.

About 2.7 miles further, Mud Creek flows into the Chattahoochee River. This meeting point is about 5 miles north of Lula.

Mud Creek's Watershed

A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a single river or stream. The area that drains into Mud Creek is called its watershed. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has given this area a special number: HUC 031300010303. It is called the Mud Creek sub-watershed.

This watershed covers about 39 square miles. It stretches from just west of Cornelia to north of Lula. It is also south of the Chattahoochee River.
