Mud River (Kentucky) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Mud River is a river in western Kentucky, United States. It's like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger one. The Mud River is a tributary of the Green River. This means it feeds into the Green River.

The Green River then flows into the Ohio River. The Ohio River eventually joins the mighty Mississippi River. So, the Mud River is part of the huge Mississippi River watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a single river system. The Mud River is about 70.9 miles (114.1 kilometers) long.

Where Does the Mud River Flow?

The Mud River starts about 5 miles (8 kilometers) east of Russellville. It flows mostly north through Logan County. Then, it forms the border between Muhlenberg and Butler counties.

The river finally joins the Green River at the town of Rochester. Near Huntsville, KY, the river usually carries about 350 cubic feet of water every second. That's a lot of water moving!

A Look at the Old Mill Pond

The Mud River was once home to a place called the Browning Mill Pond. There was a grist mill here. A grist mill uses the power of flowing water to grind grain into flour.

This historic spot is about 10 miles (16 kilometers) northeast of Russellville. You can find it on Highway 1040, also known as Coopertown Road. An old rock dam from the mill is still visible today. It has been partly taken apart by floods and age. Even so, water still rushes over it quickly, even when the river levels are low in summer.
