Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Muhammad al-Qaim Bi-Amrillah (born 893, died 17 May 946) was an important leader. He was the second Caliph of the Fatimids. The Fatimids ruled a large area called Ifriqiya, which is now part of Tunisia. Al-Qaim led the Fatimids from 934 to 946. He is also seen as the 12th Imam in the Isma'ili Faatemi faith.

Early Life and Becoming Heir

Muhammad al-Qaim was born in Salamya, Syria, around 895. His birth name was Abd ar-Rahman. His father was Ubayd Allah al-Mahdi Billah. In 910, his father took control of Ifriqiya.

In 912, al-Qaim was chosen to be the next ruler. He helped his father stop many rebellions. He also led armies into Egypt twice. These campaigns happened between 914-915 and 919-921. However, these attempts to conquer Egypt were not successful. The Abbasids fought back strongly.

Ruling as Caliph

In 934, al-Qaim became the Caliph after his father passed away. Under his rule, the Fatimid kingdom grew stronger. It became a major power in the Mediterranean region.

The Fatimids took back control of Sicily. They also raided coastal areas of Italy and France. This showed how powerful their navy had become.

Challenges and Final Years

From 944 to 947, al-Qaim faced a big challenge. A rebel leader named Abu Yazid started a major revolt. Abu Yazid united different Kharijite Berber tribes. These tribes lived in eastern Algeria.

The rebels took over much of Ifriqiya. Caliph al-Qaim and his forces were trapped in the city of Mahdia. They managed to hold out for over a year. The navy helped them survive the siege.

Al-Qaim died on 17 May 946, while the revolt was still happening. He passed away before the rebellion could be fully stopped. His son, Ismail al-Mansur, became the next Caliph.
