Mulchén is a city and a commune (a type of local government area) in the Bío Bío Province of the Bío Bío Region in Chile. It was first settled in 1871 by soldiers. This happened during a time called the Pacification of Araucania. Mulchén was officially founded in 1875.

The city is almost completely surrounded by a bend in the Bureo River. Only its southern side is not bordered by this river. Instead, the Mulchén River forms its southern boundary. Mulchén is located about 32 kilometers (20 miles) south of the city of Los Ángeles. It is also close to Chile Highway 5.

The census showed that 29,003 people lived there. This included 14,513 men and 14,490 women. Most people, about 21,819 (75.2%), lived in urban areas (cities and towns). The remaining 7,184 people (24.8%) lived in rural areas (the countryside). Between the 1992 and 2002 censuses, the population of Mulchén decreased by 3.1%. How Mulchén is Governed

Mulchén is a commune, which is a local administrative area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. This council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen directly by the people in an election every four years. From 2008 to 2012, the alcalde was Francisco Jara Delgado. He was a member of the UDI political party.

Mulchén is also part of larger areas for national elections. For example, when people vote for members of the Chamber of Deputies (a part of Chile's parliament), Mulchén is in the 47th electoral district. This district also includes many other communes like Los Ángeles and Nacimiento. The people representing this district in the Chamber of Deputies were Juan Lobos (UDI) and José Pérez (PRSD).

For the Senate (the other part of Chile's parliament), Mulchén is in the 13th senatorial constituency. This area is called Biobío-Coast. The senators representing this constituency were Victor Pérez Varela (UDI) and Mariano Ruiz-Esquide Jara (PDC).
