Nacimiento (which means "Birth" in English) is a city in Chile. It is located in the Bío Bío Province, within the Bío Bío Region. The city is about 550 kilometers (340 miles) south of Santiago. It is also 104 kilometers (65 miles) from Concepción, a major city in the region.
Nacimiento started as a fort for the Spanish army. It helped them control the land. The fort was officially named on Christmas Eve in December 1603. Its full name was Nacimiento de Nuestro Señor, meaning "Nativity of Our Lord."
The fort was destroyed several times by the Mapuche people. It was rebuilt in 1665, 1724, and 1739. In 1749, the fort and its people moved to where the city is today. For a long time, Nacimiento was seen as the last frontier of Chile. Later, foreign investors helped it grow into a busy city. The Palacio Gleisner building shows how rich the city became early on.
The city is surrounded by rivers like the Bío Bío and the Vergara. Some companies that work with lumber have affected the Vergara River. This river was very important for local farming.
About Nacimiento's People
Nacimiento is home to many people. In 2002, a study found that 25,971 people lived there. This included 13,090 men and 12,881 women. Most people, about 80.4%, lived in urban areas (cities and towns). The rest, about 19.6%, lived in rural areas (the countryside). The city of Nacimiento covers an area of 934.9 square kilometers (361.0 square miles).
How Nacimiento is Governed
Nacimiento is a "commune," which is like a local government area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. The council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen directly by the people every four years. The alcalde from 2008 to 2012 was Gerardo Montes Cisternas.
