History of Mulhall

Mulhall started as a train station for the Santa Fe railroad. It was first called Alfred, named after an attorney's son.

How Mulhall Got Its Name

The town's name was changed to Mulhall not long after the land run in 1889. This was because there were two towns named Alfred at the time. The town was renamed after Zach Mulhall. He was the father of Lucille Mulhall. Lucille was famous for being the first official cowgirl to compete and win against men in rodeo events.

The Mulhall Family Shows

Zach Mulhall had his own Wild West show that traveled all over the country. Lucille and her brothers and sisters were the stars of these shows. The Mulhall family were also friends with the Miller Brothers, who owned the 101 Ranch nearby. They often performed together and shared talented performers. Famous people like Will Rogers and Tom Mix were also part of these early shows. Will Rogers, who was known as "The Cherokee Kid" back then, even taught Lucille how to twirl a lariat. She became very good at it!

Carrie Nation's Visit

In 1901, a famous activist named Carrie Nation visited Mulhall. She spoke to the town's saloons about the problems caused by alcohol. She warned them that she would return if they didn't stop selling liquor. After her visit, the town quickly decided to close down the saloons.

Lucille Mulhall's Fame

In 1907, a magazine called Leslie's Weekly featured a picture of Lucille Mulhall. They called her the world's best lariat thrower. She had won this title in San Antonio. The magazine also mentioned that she performed for President Theodore Roosevelt.

The 1999 Tornado

On May 3, 1999, a very strong tornado hit Mulhall. This was 110 years after the town was founded. The tornado was over a mile wide at times and caused a lot of damage. About 80 percent of the town was destroyed. The town's water tower fell down because of the powerful winds. Luckily, the police were able to warn everyone, so no one in Mulhall was killed. However, 60 to 70 percent of the 130 homes in Mulhall were destroyed. The Mulhall/Orlando Elementary School was also ruined.

Lucille's Restaurant

Lucille's Restaurant was one of the few original buildings that survived the tornado. It was located in an old bank building. The restaurant had many cool pictures of Lucille and her family from their days in the Wild West shows. In 2009, a fire badly damaged the restaurant. It was rebuilt and became popular with many different people. It closed permanently in 2018. However, in 2021, new owners bought it and reopened it as Lucille's Chuckwagon. The Methodist church also survived the tornado.
