About Mullaquana

How Mullaquana Got Its Name

The boundaries for Mullaquana were first set up in June 2000. They were changed again in 2011 to make them clearer.

The name "Mullaquana" comes from Mullaquana Road, which is a street in the area. This name was chosen to avoid confusion. There's another place in South Australia called "Eight Mile Creek," so they picked "Mullaquana" instead.

Where Mullaquana Is Located

Mullaquana is part of a few important government areas. For federal elections, it's in the Division of Grey. This means people living here vote for a representative in the national parliament.

For state elections, Mullaquana is in the electoral district of Giles. This is for voting in the state parliament of South Australia.

The suburb is also split between two types of local government. The western side of Horseshoe Road is managed by the City of Whyalla. This is a local council that looks after things like parks and roads.

The eastern side of Mullaquana is in an unincorporated area. This means it's not part of a local council. Instead, the state government manages it directly.

What Mullaquana Is Used For

The part of Mullaquana that belongs to the City of Whyalla has some important features. This is where you'll find the Whyalla Airport. It also has areas set aside for businesses and homes.

The land in the unincorporated area is very special. The Government of South Australia considers it "strategically important." This is because it plays a key role in making steel. It's one of two such areas near Whyalla that are vital for the state's economy.
