Mulline is a fascinating ghost town in Western Australia. It's located in the Goldfields-Esperance region. You can find it between the towns of Kalgoorlie and Leonora. It's part of the Shire of Menzies.

Mulline: A Historic Gold Town

Mulline became a town because of gold. In the 1890s, people found gold in this area. This led to a "gold rush," where many miners came hoping to get rich. Because so many people arrived, the government officially made Mulline a town in 1897.

Where Did the Name Mulline Come From?

The town's name, Mulline, comes from a nearby natural landmark. This landmark is called Mulline Rock. A surveyor named Brazier recorded the name in 1904. The name is Aboriginal in origin. However, what the name actually means is not known today.

Gold Mining in Mulline

The most important mine in Mulline was the Lady Gladys. This mine operated for many years, from 1896 to 1911. Another mine working around the same time was called the Off Chance mine. To help the miners, a special machine called a state battery was built in 1899. This machine helped crush rocks to get the gold out.

Town Life and Facilities

Even though it was a small gold town, Mulline had some important services. Land was set aside for a police station, but it was never built. By 1910, the town had two hotels. These hotels were important places for miners to relax and gather.
