Early Life and Education
Munawar Hasan was born in Delhi, which was part of British India at the time. This happened on January 5, 1940. When India was divided in 1947, his family moved to Karachi, which became part of Pakistan.
He studied at the University of Karachi. He earned a Master's degree in sociology in 1963. Later, in 1966, he got another Master's degree in Islamic Studies.
Involvement in Student Politics
Munawar Hasan was very active in student groups. In 1959, he became the president of the National Students Federation in Karachi. This shows he was a leader even when he was young.
In 1960, he joined another student group called Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba. He quickly became a leader there too. By 1962, he was president of its group at the University of Karachi. He then led the Karachi chapter in 1963.
He became the national president of Islami Jamiat-e-Talaba in 1964. He served in this top role for three years in a row. During his time, the group worked hard to raise awareness about education issues.
Career and Political Journey
In 1963, Munawar Hasan started working as a research assistant. He worked at the Islamic Research Academy in Karachi. He later became its secretary general in 1969. Under his guidance, the academy published many scholarly books.
He also helped manage two magazines, The Criterion and The Universal Message. These magazines were published in Karachi.
Munawar Hasan joined the Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan political party in 1967. He held many important roles within the party in Karachi. He was an Assistant Secretary, Secretary, Deputy Ameer, and then the Ameer (leader) of the city branch.
He was also chosen to be part of the party's main decision-making bodies. These were the Central Shura and the Executive Council. He represented his party in big political groups. These included the United Democratic Front and the Pakistan National Alliance. These groups were formed by many different Pakistani political parties.
In 1977, he ran for a seat in the National Assembly of Pakistan. He won his election in Karachi with the most votes in all of Pakistan. He became the Assistant Secretary General of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan in 1992–93. Then, in 1993, he became the Secretary General.
In 2009, he was elected as the Emir, or head, of the Jamaat-e-Islami party. This was a very important position.
Leadership and Legacy
Munawar Hasan was known for living a very simple life. People often talked about how he lived in just two rooms. He was happy with the money he received from his party.
He was seen more as someone who focused on ideas and beliefs. He was less focused on making political deals with other parties.
After his party lost badly in the 2013 Pakistani general election, Munawar Hasan took responsibility. He offered to step down from his leadership role. However, the party's Executive Council did not accept his resignation at that time.
In March 2014, Munawar Hasan became the first leader in the history of Jamaat-e-Islami to be voted out of office. Siraj-ul-Haq Khan was chosen as the new leader. Some people thought the party members wanted a younger leader. They also wanted someone who was more practical in politics.
Later Life and Passing
On June 11, 2020, it was confirmed that Munawar Hasan had gotten COVID-19. He was in the intensive care unit (ICU) of a hospital. He sadly passed away on June 26, 2020, in Karachi.
