Murat Yakin (born on September 15, 1974) is a famous Swiss football coach and former player. He is currently the manager of the Switzerland national team.
In 2021, after coaching several Swiss clubs like Basel and Grasshoppers, he became the coach of the Swiss national team. He successfully led them to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2024.

His Time as a Player
Murat Yakin spent most of his playing career with his hometown club, Basel. He was a key defender and captain for the team. Basel had great success in Switzerland and also did well in European competitions.
Winning Trophies with Basel
Yakin helped Basel win the Swiss Super League five times. These wins were in 1995, 1996, 2002, 2004, and 2005. He also won the Swiss Cup three times in 1994, 2002, and 2003.
One of his most memorable games was on August 28, 2002. Basel played against Celtic in a Champions League qualifying match. Basel won 2–0, and Yakin scored the second goal. This win helped Basel qualify for the main Champions League group stage.
Playing for Switzerland
Murat Yakin played 49 games for the Switzerland national team. He represented his country in the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament. In 2003, he also played in a special charity match called the FIFA "Match against Poverty" in Basel. He was on Ronaldo's team, which won the game.
Becoming a Coach
After his playing career, Murat Yakin became a football coach. He started by working with youth teams and smaller clubs.
Starting Out in Coaching
In 2009, Yakin became the coach of Thun. In his first year, he led them to win the Swiss Challenge League in 2010. This meant the team was promoted to a higher league. The next season, Thun finished fifth in the Swiss Super League. This earned them a spot in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds. In May 2011, he moved to coach Luzern.
Leading FC Basel
On October 15, 2012, Yakin was appointed as the new manager of Basel. Under his leadership, Basel had some amazing wins. They beat Chelsea twice in the 2013–14 Champions League group stage. Yakin was very proud of his team and the fans. He even received praise from the famous Chelsea manager, José Mourinho. On May 17, 2014, Yakin left Basel after guiding them to win two league titles in two years.
Coaching Spartak Moscow
On June 16, 2014, Yakin became the manager of Spartak Moscow, a team in the Russian Premier League. He signed a long-term contract. However, after just one season, his contract ended by mutual agreement on May 30, 2015.
Back to Schaffhausen
On June 17, 2019, Murat Yakin returned to coach Schaffhausen. He had previously coached them for a short period. He took over after leaving Sion earlier that year.
Coaching the Swiss National Team
On August 9, 2021, Yakin was chosen to manage the Switzerland national team. He led Switzerland to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. This happened after Northern Ireland played a draw against Italy, which helped Switzerland secure their spot. To show his thanks, Yakin sent 9.3 kg of Swiss chocolate to the Irish Football Association!
In the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he guided Switzerland to finish second in their group. They made it to the Round of 16 but lost to Portugal. At the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament, Yakin again led Switzerland to the Round of 16. They had a big 2-0 win against defending champions Italy. They were later knocked out in the Quarter Finals by England after a penalty shootout.
Personal Life
Murat Yakin has a younger brother named Hakan Yakin. Hakan was also a professional footballer. He played for clubs like Grasshoppers and Basel. Hakan also played for the Switzerland at an international level. Murat Yakin's family has Turkish roots.
