Murat Yakin (born on September 15, 1974) is a famous Swiss football coach and former player. He is currently the manager of the Swiss national football team.
In 2021, after coaching several Swiss clubs like Basel and Grasshoppers, he became the coach of the Swiss national team. He successfully led them to qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2024.

Playing Career
Murat Yakin spent most of his playing career with his hometown club, Basel. He was a key defender and captain for the team. They achieved great success in Switzerland and also did well in European competitions.
Winning Titles with Basel
Yakin helped Basel win the Swiss Super League five times. These wins were in 1995, 1996, 2002, 2004, and 2005. He also won the Swiss Cup three times in 1994, 2002, and 2003.
One of his most memorable games was on August 28, 2002. Basel played against Celtic in a Champions League qualifying match. Basel won 2–0, with Yakin scoring a goal. This win helped Basel qualify for the main Champions League group stage. They advanced because of the away goals rule, which means goals scored away from home count more.
International Appearances
Yakin played 49 times for the Switzerland national team. He represented his country in the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament. In 2003, he also played in a special charity match called the FIFA "Match against Poverty" in Basel. He was on Ronaldo's team, which won the game.

Early Coaching Roles
In 2009, Yakin became the coach of Thun. In his first year, he led them to win the Swiss Challenge League in 2010. This meant they were promoted to a higher league. The next season, Thun finished fifth in the Swiss Super League. This earned them a spot in the UEFA Europa League qualifying rounds. In May 2011, he moved to coach Luzern.
Success with FC Basel
On October 15, 2012, Yakin was appointed as the new manager of Basel. Under his leadership, Basel achieved impressive results. They even beat Chelsea twice in the 2013–14 Champions League group stage. Yakin praised the fans for their amazing support during these games. He also received compliments from Chelsea's manager at the time, José Mourinho. On May 17, 2014, Yakin left Basel after guiding them to win two domestic league titles in two years.
Coaching Abroad and Return to Switzerland
After Basel, Yakin coached Spartak Moscow in Russia for one season in 2014-2015. He then returned to Switzerland, coaching clubs like Schaffhausen, Grasshoppers, and Sion. In June 2019, he returned to coach Schaffhausen again.
Leading the Switzerland National Team
On August 9, 2021, Murat Yakin became the manager of the Switzerland national team. He led them through the 2022 World Cup qualification. Switzerland qualified for the tournament after Northern Ireland held Italy to a draw. As a thank you, Yakin sent 9.3 kg of Swiss chocolate to the Irish Football Association!
At the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he guided Switzerland to finish second in their group. They reached the Round of 16, where they lost to Portugal. In the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament, Yakin led Switzerland to the Round of 16. They had a famous 2–0 victory against defending champions Italy. They were later knocked out in the quarter-finals by England after a penalty shootout.

Murat Yakin has a younger brother named Hakan Yakin. Hakan was also a professional footballer. He played for clubs like Grasshoppers and Basel. He also represented Switzerland internationally. Murat Yakin's family has Turkish roots.
