Early Life and Family
Hakan Yakin was born in Basel, Switzerland, on 22 February 1977. His parents were from Turkey. He grew up in Münchenstein, a town near Basel. This area is close to the borders of France and Germany.
Hakan has two brothers who also played professional football. His older brother, Murat Yakin, also played for the Swiss national team. Murat is now a football manager. Hakan's half-brother, Ertan Irizik, was also a professional player. The name Yakin comes from a Turkish word meaning close or adjacent.
Club Career Highlights
Hakan Yakin started playing football in the youth teams of FC Concordia Basel. In January 1995, he signed his first professional contract with FC Basel, his hometown club. He made his first league appearance for Basel on 12 April 1995. In that game, he scored a goal just 18 seconds after coming onto the field!
Moving Between Clubs
After two and a half years at Basel, Yakin moved to Grasshoppers. He then played on loan for FC St. Gallen before returning to Grasshoppers. In January 2001, he came back to FC Basel.
Success with Basel
With Basel, Yakin won the national Double (both the league and cup) in the 2001–02 season. A year later, they won the Swiss Cup again. He remembers a Champions League match against Liverpool in November 2002 as the "match of his life." Basel drew 3–3 and moved on in the tournament. Yakin provided all three assists in that game.
In April 2003, Yakin scored a "perfect hat-trick" (a goal with his left foot, right foot, and head) against Young Boys. However, in the next game against the same team, he was sent off after getting two yellow cards.
Time Abroad and Return to Switzerland
Yakin's time playing outside Switzerland was not very successful. He played for Paris Saint-Germain, VfB Stuttgart, and Galatasaray. In 2005, he returned to Switzerland and joined BSC Young Boys. In July 2008, he moved to Al-Gharafa in Qatar.
In 2009, Yakin signed with FC Luzern in Switzerland. His brother Murat later became his manager there. In January 2012, Yakin moved to AC Bellinzona in the second Swiss league. He scored his first two goals for Bellinzona in April 2012.
International Career

Hakan Yakin played 87 times for the Switzerland national football team. His first game was in 2000. He was offered Turkish citizenship but chose to play for Switzerland. He played in major tournaments like UEFA Euro 2004, UEFA Euro 2008, and the 2006 FIFA World Cup and 2010 FIFA World Cup.
Euro 2008 Performance
At Euro 2008, Yakin scored the first goal in Switzerland's match against Turkey. He did not celebrate out of respect for his family's home country. Switzerland lost that game and was eliminated early. However, in their final group match against Portugal, Yakin scored two goals, including a penalty kick. Switzerland won 2–0, their first ever win at the UEFA European Football Championship. Yakin finished the tournament as one of the top goalscorers with three goals.
He retired from the Swiss national team on 4 October 2011.
Coaching Career
After his playing career, Hakan Yakin became a coach. In 2019, he started as an assistant coach for his brother Murat at FC Schaffhausen. When Murat became the manager of the Swiss national team in August 2021, Hakan took over as caretaker manager for Schaffhausen for a short time. He then went back to being an assistant coach.
On 4 June 2022, Hakan Yakin became the main coach at Schaffhausen. He left the club on 20 May 2023.
