On December 8, 1980, the famous musician John Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman. This sad event happened outside the Dakota building in the Upper West Side of Manhattan, New York City. Chapman had traveled all the way from Hawaii to New York with the intention of harming Lennon. Chapman later said he was upset with Lennon's lifestyle and also about a comment Lennon had made, saying The Beatles were "more popular than Jesus".

Remembering John Lennon
John Lennon was a very well-known musician, singer, and songwriter. He was famous around the world as a member of The Beatles, one of the most successful bands in history. After The Beatles, he had a successful solo career, creating many popular songs that are still loved today.
What Happened on That Day?
On the evening of December 8, 1980, John Lennon was returning home to The Dakota with his wife, Yoko Ono. As they arrived, Mark David Chapman was waiting for them. Chapman shot Lennon, causing serious injuries. Lennon was quickly taken to a nearby hospital, but sadly, he could not be saved.
The Person Responsible
Mark David Chapman was taken into custody soon after the shooting. He admitted he was responsible for Lennon's death. Because of what he did, he was sent to a special facility for a very long time. He has remained there ever since.
