The muriquis, also known as woolly spider monkeys, are a special type of monkey found only in Brazil. They belong to the genus Brachyteles. There are two main kinds: the southern muriqui (B. arachnoides) and the northern muriqui (B. hypoxanthus). The name "muriqui" comes from an old native Tupi word. It means 'largest monkey', which is a great name for them!

These monkeys are the biggest New World monkeys. Sadly, the northern muriqui is one of the most endangered monkeys in the whole world. They only live in a few forests in Brazil.

Meet the Muriquis: Woolly Spider Monkeys

Muriquis are truly unique animals. They are known for their gentle nature and their long, strong tails. These tails act almost like a fifth limb, helping them swing through the trees.

What Do Muriquis Look Like?

Adult muriquis are quite large. They can be about 15 to 23 inches (38 to 58 cm) long. This measurement does not even include their long tails! They usually weigh between 10 and 20 pounds (4.5 to 9 kilos). Their fur can be different shades, from brown to black. A cool fact about their tails is that the very end has no fur. This helps them grip branches better.

Where Do Muriquis Live?

Muriquis are only found in the forests of Brazil. They prefer the Atlantic Forest, which is a very important habitat. This forest is home to many different animals and plants. Sadly, much of this forest has been lost. This is why muriquis are in danger.

How Do Muriquis Live Together?

Muriquis are very social animals. They live in groups that can be as small as four monkeys or as large as 43! What's really interesting is how peaceful they are. Unlike many other animals, muriquis do not fight over their territory. They share their space and food without much conflict. This makes them one of the most peaceful primate species.

What Do Muriquis Eat?

Muriquis are mostly leaf-eaters. Their main diet consists of fresh leaves from different trees. But they also enjoy a variety of other foods. In the rainy season, they might eat fruit and flowers. They also munch on bark, bamboo, ferns, nectar, pollen, and seeds. This varied diet helps them get all the nutrients they need.

Protecting Muriquis

Because the northern muriqui is so endangered, many people are working to protect them. Conservation efforts focus on saving their forest homes. They also work to help muriqui populations grow. Protecting these amazing monkeys helps protect the entire forest ecosystem.
