Murray Bannerman was born on April 27, 1957. He is a Canadian former ice hockey goalie. He played most of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks. He also played a short time for the Vancouver Canucks. The Canucks picked him in the 1977 NHL draft.
Playing Hockey
Murray Bannerman was born in Fort Frances, Ontario. When he was young, he played in the 1969 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. He played with a youth hockey team from Winnipeg.
His career in the NHL began with the Vancouver Canucks in 1977. He played just one period for them. He did not let in any goals during that time. This makes him the only goalie in Canucks history to not allow a goal!
He spent most of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks. In 1983, he was chosen to play in the 35th National Hockey League All-Star Game. This game features the best players from different teams.
Murray Bannerman was first a backup goalie for Tony Esposito. But in the 1982 playoffs, he got his chance to shine. He won his first two games while playing away from home. This helped his Chicago team win against the Minnesota North Stars. His hockey career ended after the 1988 season.
The next season, Murray became the main goalie for Chicago. Tony Esposito became his backup. Murray played in the NHL All-Star game two times. He was traded to Chicago in 1978.
Murray Bannerman is fifth on the Blackhawks' all-time goalie list. He has 116 wins and played 288 games for the team. He also played over 16,000 minutes in a Chicago jersey. In the playoffs, he is fourth on the Blackhawks' all-time goalie list. He has 20 wins in 40 playoff games.
Life After Hockey
Murray Bannerman lives and works in the Chicago area. He still follows the Blackhawks team. He has many great memories from his time playing for them. He especially remembers how excited the fans were at the old Chicago Stadium. He also helps out with the Blackhawk Alumni Association sometimes.
As of 2019, Murray Bannerman is a vice president at Traffic Tech, Inc. This company helps with transportation and shipping.
