Murray Town is a small community, also called a locality, located in the Mid North region of South Australia. It sits to the east of the lower Flinders Ranges, which are a beautiful mountain range. This area was first settled in 1883.

Murray Town was an important rest stop for teams of bullocks (male cattle) and horses. These animals pulled wagons loaded with grain from farms further north and east. The grain was being taken to Port Germein, a port town where it could be shipped.

History of Murray Town

Murray Town was officially established in 1883. Its main purpose was to provide a place for people and their animal teams to rest during long journeys. These journeys involved moving important farm goods like grain across the region.

How Murray Town Got Its Name

The town was named after a person called Alexander Murray. He was famous for bringing a special type of sheep to Australia. This sheep breed is known as the Murray Merino. Merino sheep are well-known for their very fine and soft wool.

What's Happening in Murray Town Today?

In the past, Murray Town used to have a popular event called the annual spring Murray Town Auction. However, this auction stopped in 2016. It became too difficult to find enough volunteers to help run the event.
