Mutt Carey was born in Hahnville, Louisiana. When he was young, his family moved to New Orleans. This city is famous for its music, especially jazz.

Mutt's older brother, Jack Carey, was also a musician. Jack played the trombone and led his own band. By 1912, Mutt was already playing the cornet in his brother's band. The cornet is an instrument very similar to a trumpet.

Mutt Carey's Music Career

Mutt Carey started his music journey playing in brass bands. These bands were popular in the New Orleans area between 1913 and 1917.

In 1914, he began working with a famous bandleader named Kid Ory. Mutt and Kid Ory would play together many times over the years.

After performing in vaudeville shows in 1917, Mutt returned to New Orleans. Vaudeville was a type of entertainment with many different acts, like music, comedy, and dance.

In 1919, Mutt went to California with Kid Ory's band. He later took over leading the band in 1925 when Kid Ory left.

Appearing in Movies

Mutt Carey's big band was called the Jeffersonians. This band even appeared in silent movies! They were in The Legion of the Condemned and The Road to Ruin, both made in 1928.

The Great Depression and Comeback

From about 1929 to 1933, Mutt rejoined Kid Ory's band. However, during the Great Depression, it was hard to find work as a musician. The Great Depression was a time when many people lost their jobs and money. Because of this, Mutt had to work as a Pullman porter for a while. A Pullman porter helped passengers on trains.

In March 1944, Mutt Carey joined Kid Ory again. They formed an all-star band. This group helped bring back traditional New Orleans jazz music on the West Coast. The band played on a CBS Radio show called The Orson Welles Almanac.

This All Star Jazz Group included other great musicians like Ed Garland, Jimmie Noone, Bud Scott, Zutty Singleton, and Buster Wilson. Later, the group was renamed Kid Ory's Creole Jazz Band. They made many important recordings together.

In 1947, Mutt Carey left Kid Ory's band. He then started leading his own music group.

Later Life

Mutt Carey passed away in Lake Elsinore, California, on September 3, 1948. He was 56 years old. His music continues to be enjoyed by jazz fans around the world.
