What Happens in the Story
The Camp Trip Begins
The students from Canterlot High School go on a field trip to Camp Everfree. This nature camp is owned by Gloriosa Daisy and her brother, Timber Spruce. On the bus ride, Twilight Sparkle has a bad dream. She dreams of "Midnight Sparkle," a powerful and dark version of herself. This version appeared when she was affected by magic before.
Her friend Sunset Shimmer helps her feel better. Sunset understands because she also had a similar experience. Soon after they arrive at camp, Twilight discovers she has new powers. She can move things with her mind, which is called telekinesis. She worries this means Midnight Sparkle is still inside her.
Strange Events at Camp
That night, Timber tells a scary story around the campfire. He talks about a forest spirit named Gaea Everfree. This spirit is said to get angry if the camp is built on her land. She might cause natural disasters. The next day, a sailboat crashes into a dock the campers are building. They wanted to use the dock as a runway for a fashion show.
The campers see sparkling gem dust. This dust matches the description of Gaea's presence in Timber's story. This makes them believe Gaea is real. But Twilight thinks her new magic caused the accident. She starts to stay away from her friends.
Discovering New Powers
Later, Twilight's friends also start to get special powers. They can only use these powers while they are at the camp. Twilight believes her magic is somehow giving powers to her friends. She decides to run away from camp. Sunset follows Twilight into the woods.
Sunset discovers her own new power: telepathic empathy. This means she can sense what others are thinking and feeling just by touching them. She uses this power to convince Twilight to stay. As Timber leads them back to camp, Sunset notices gem dust falling from his pocket. She starts to think he is causing the "Gaea" attacks.
Uncovering the Truth
Sunset then hears Timber arguing with Gloriosa. She thinks he wants to close the camp. She remembers him saying he wished for city life. So, Sunset believes Timber is trying to scare everyone away to shut down the camp.
Sunset takes Twilight and Spike to explore a nearby cave. Timber had said this cave was off-limits. Inside, they find glowing geodes filled with Equestrian magic. Gloriosa then confronts them. She reveals that she is the one causing the strange events.
Sunset sees visions through her empathy power. She learns that Gloriosa was desperate to save the camp from closing. Gloriosa had been wearing the geodes as a necklace to use their power. The "disasters" were just her trying to use magic to make the camp better. Timber knew this and made up the Gaea Everfree story to protect his sister.
The Final Showdown
Gloriosa adds more geodes to her necklace. The magic makes her lose control. She starts to look like Gaea. She crashes the campers' fashion show rehearsal. Gloriosa wants to "protect" them by trapping the camp in a thorny cage.
Sunset's friends try to stop Gloriosa, but they can't. They encourage Twilight to use her own magic to help. After a final struggle against the dark "Midnight Sparkle" inside her, Twilight takes control. She breaks the geode necklace apart. This frees Gloriosa from the magic's bad influence.
The geodes then turn into special pendants for Twilight and her friends. They gain new magical forms and fix the camp. The camp is still in danger of closing. So, the girls quickly plan a fundraiser dance inside the cave. Their plan works! Many former campers come, and they raise enough money to save the camp.

In a short scene after the credits, the girls finally fix the dock that kept getting broken. But Pinkie Pie accidentally breaks it again with her powers. This leaves everyone surprised!
